Music Voice - 1993 Best Unsigned Band Contest
David Grossman is the second artist we've featured in this column who has not been thoroughly checked out live. A quick listen from one of our writers at a casual live gig recently and a major inspection ot Grossman's current cd "Words & Miles" made it obvious that he should be considered. Consider it considered. If this was 1968, David Grossman wouldn't be anything all that special. He'd be one of the many prolific-type songbirds using his clever and well thought out wit to convey messages of loves lost and won, and battles still to be fought. One of the many troubadours who put how we often feel into words we are usually unable to string together. One of the many of the new onslaught of "folkies" without a cause. But the 60s are long none and lost, as is most of the magic of the people and the music of the time. David Grossman still retains some of that cleverness and, beware, he's not afraid to use it - and use it he will. For the nineties, Grossman is a rare commodity, a wandering minstrel of sorts. A poet capturing brief vignettes of life and relaying them to us, the unsuspecting listener, to enjoy. In a musical era where most want the high-tech approach to music as a route to fortunes, Grossman can be seen sitting in his room, wearing a sly grin as he pens the next clever line to his most recent "outing.."" A rare commodity indeed. When David Grossman was under consideration for the feature, he'd been playing solo, just like the minstrels in the above scenario. Soon, if not right now, you will be able to see David with a full and more electric (than the album) band. Since David moved to Phoenix from the Bay Area, where he garnered several favorable reviews from local journalists, he has supposedly been busy promoting his new album "Heaven On Earth," which we do not have a copy of. Kinda strange someone would submit an old album for critique, review or other consideration when a new one is available. We suggest, you go and check Mr. Grossman out, and tell us what you think. We too will be out checking him out further, and hoping he lives up to this honor bestowed on him by yours truly-if he doesn't, we'll be sure to let you know. |
