David Shepherd Grossman "In Sight". Feb. 5th, 1998

by Thomas Bond

David Shepherd Grossman is undoubtedly the hardest working musician in the Valley. The singer and songwriter can be found virtually every night of the week performing somewhere in town - often two gigs per night. A schedule like that doesn't seem to leave much time for composing, yet Grossman already has a handful of releases to his credit.

The latest, In Sight, is a decidedly mellow affair. Grossman sings and plays guitar or piano with minimal additional accompaniment and this stripped - down setting lets his heartfelt lyrics and weary voice shine unfettered. Naturally, loneliness and love are topical concerns, but Grossman handles them without resorting to simple cliches and his tunes ring with simple truths of a tired troubadour. In Songman, he sings resignedly as if addressing himself, "Songman, no one's listening." It'll be a damn shame if that turns into a self-fulling prophecy.
